Rule of 5’s

Rule of 5’s

September 20, 2020

OK, so you’ve got to nail a training session and you’re sweating just thinking of the pain that awaits. One of the reasons training hurts, is time seems to stand still. The second-hand seems to linger over every second while we’re busy turning beetroot and dying of exhaustion. I’d like to offer you the ‘Rule of 5’s’. This is to break your suffering down into mental blocks of 5 minute sections. This is not to say that you have to use 5 minute intervals, more that you aim on just getting through the next 5 minute breakdown. 5 minutes is my sweet spot between mental distraction and conscious suffering, with 3 minutes passing while I try and zone out before then looking at the clock and being able to push through the remaining 2 minutes of suffering. This is simple to apply to 5 minute intervals but on longer sessions; e.g. 20 minutes FTP test or a 60 minute workout, just work to get to the next 5 minute marker. Whatever time interval works for you, break your sessions down into manageable chunks and just focus on conquering one at a time. They say “anyone can suffer for a minute” but Never Follow; and you can suffer for at least 5.
